Sunday Driver Rock

Sunday Driver Rock, originally uploaded by unbreakablecomb.

A (former) New Boston landmark, Sunday Driver Rock was well known in the area for many years. Unfortunetly, sometime after I took this picture (2001) the sign was painted over. No one was sure who originally painted the rock, but the sign was there from at least the early 90's till 2001.

There are so many things I drive by everyday and say, "I should stop and grab a quick snap" as I drive right past only have it change and disappear forever...

I guess that is a good motto for a photographer too.

"You stop to think, you think to stop."

I'm happy to report that it has been restored.

i drove by Sunday driver rock every day (1965 - 1967) on my way to work at the new boston tracking station. it was noted on old maps of the area from the thirties and forties. nobody knew who did it, when or why but it was beyond the memories of the locals.

Unfortunately, somebody, once again, has a problem with this piece of history & painted over it once again! Who are you? Show your face!

I have known of Sunday Driver Rock since I was a child in the 60's. The people of New Boston hold it in high esteem. The repainting is a way of preservation. When the road was being redone, the rock was destined to be pushed into the woods to allow for widening and straightening the corner. The towns people would have none of that and caused an uproar that saved the rock and redesigned the planned corner. And as I last heard, it has been repainted to its original quote.. You Sunday Driver, If you stop to think, you think to stop

the rock has now been ruined. someone has "fixed" the penmanship and grammar. They might as well have dumped a bucket of paint on it. The history is now gone.

The history is now gone. The most recent "renovation" changed the wording and position of the message. Who made that decision?

So many times I have given or been given directions to someone's home in the area (60's-80's) using Sunday Driver Rock for a landmark. Like knowing the Boston Post Road, Sunday Driver Rock was a landmark for locals.

Thanks for the photo post. It fired fond memories for me. I now live far from the area and unfortunately won't be back.
