Enjoy the snow while we have it because soon enough the warmer temperatures will arrive and the snow will melt like Frosty the Snowman.
But worry not, because the snow will be back again someday.Photos taken in and around the state of New Hampshire

Walking on Air
One snowstorm this year and everyone, it seemed was out sledding. Roby Park in South Nashua is a popular spot for area residents that even includes snowmaking. But with the weather being so warm this year, I haven't seen any snow being made. This day, the slope was full of people all out having fun, young and old alike.
The other thing about NH youth is I think they are cold blooded which explains why they wear sandals but no jackets in the winter.

Sunlight Through Snowfall
After clearing snow from my driveway and taking trash to the dump, I sat in my chair, pulled by the bright sunlight and clear blue sky.
I tracked deer who had wandered onto my property and criss-crossed the brook a few times taking some photos seen here.
Amazing what surprises there are to meet us, if only we stop to look.

Harriet Wilson Memorial
"Oh, holy Father, by thy power,
Thus far in life I'm brought;
And now in this dark, trying hour,
O God, forsake me not"
Harriet E. Wilson
In 1859, Harriet Wilson, a mulatto woman from New Hampshire published a novel with the stated hope of earning sufficient money simply to survive. Instead, her novel Our Nig; or Sketches From the Life of A Free Black, became a powerful and controversial narrative that continues to touch and unsettle readers around the world.

New Hampshire @ Play in the Winter
Seemed like winter took forever to arrive, but people here in New Hampshire finally transitioned from t-shirts and shorts to skiing, skating, and sledding.
The days are getting longer, though, and soon enough we'll be looking for the first flowers to press through thawing ground.

Obama at University of NH at Durham.
"I don't know what you guys did this weekend, but I announced I'm running for the presidency of the United States," said U.S. Senator, and presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, receiving wild applause from the crowd of 3,000 packed into the University of New Hampshire's Field House Monday night to hear him speak.

What a Glorious Gift I Received
Friday was my birthday and anyone who had a view of the skies at sunset was witness to the very best gift one could have for a birthday present. The skies over New Hampshire were afire with a wonderful sunset that ranged from sky-blue pink to firey red and deep blue. It was am amazing site to see.

New Hampshire winter
The weather forecasts our first significant storm of the season in the next day or two. And if things work out as predicted, we'll hang up our skates and replace them with snowshoes, cross-country skis, and downhill skiing lift tickets to take advantage of freshly fallen snow.

got fish?
So, the ice fishing season actually happened! There was quite some concern that there would not be enough ice this year for ice fishing. Glad to see it underway and derbies going off on schedule.

SkyVenture New Hampshire is a new state of the art indoor vertical wind tunnel where YOU can experience the FREEDOM of FLIGHT! There is no falling sensation, you just float above the trampoline floor. The indoor vertical wind tunnel is not only used by the world’s best skydivers to train in but it was also designed for the general public to experience the sport of body flight.

C O L D
And to think, it wasn't long ago that we were complaining that it was too warm. (Well, were we really complaining?)
That's one thing I like about New Hampshire, the weather is never boring (except when it rains day upon day upon day). As a rule, if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes.
The cold has settled in and photographers have taken to hibernating and digging through archives. Baby, it's cold out there!

Old Man of the Mountain
NH's icon.
The Old Man of the Mountain
May he rest in peace. I don't think NHites will ever forget him. Truly the stuff legends are born from.
More links to good information on this natural rock formation.

The Old Man of the Mountains: c. 30,000 b.c. - May 2, 2003 It was uncertain when the outcropping actually fell because clouds had obscured the area Thursday and Friday. A state park trails crew reported Saturday morning that the Old Man of the Mountain was gone.
On Saturday, May 3, the staff of goLittleton.com scaled the Old Man's former cranium to obtain visual documentation of the geologic mishap.
Three large turnbuckles, which had spanned an (ultimately fatal) fiberglass-epoxy covered crack, now grasp at thin air....
From Wikipedia
The profile has been New Hampshire's state emblem since 1945. It was put on the state's license plate, state highway-route signs, and the back of New Hampshire's Statehood Quarter, which is popularly promoted as the only US coin with a profile on both sides. Before the collapse, it could be seen from special viewing areas along Interstate 93 in Franconia Notch State Park, approximately 80 miles north of Concord, New Hampshire.
From About.com
In November of 2003, a plan to honor the legacy of New Hampshire's icon was finalized by the Task Force. The first phase of the plan was completed in May 2004 with the installation at Franconia Notch Parkway viewing areas of high-tech viewers that show what the Old Man of the Mountain looked like before it fell. An award to honor individuals and organizations for their work in preserving the Old Man's legacy was also established in 2004.
Phase 2 involves the creation of a sculpture-lined walking path around Profile Lake. The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund, in cooperation with the State of New Hampshire, is currently reviewing proposals from artists.
The Old Man of the Mountain Revitalization Task Force also recommended construction of an expanded museum at the base of Cannon Mountain and possibly a large-scale replica of the natural wonder. Fundraising for this third phase of the project is still underway. You can contribute to The Old Man of the Mountain Revitalization Fund by sending a donation to: Old Man of the Mountain Revitalization Fund, c/o Governor's Office, State House, Concord, NH 03301.

The Mid-Winter Still Life
A pair of shoes my wife recently bought for my daughter. Taken on Fortepan 400 with an Orbit view camera (4x5). Some front tilt to get the plane of focus right. f/8 doesn't quite get the back of the inside of the shoe in focus. Developed in Rodinal 1:25. Printed on Kodak semi-matte paper.
When the temperatures dip below zero and the cold winter wind howls, being outside to take photos is not quite the same as during other New Hampshire seasons.
Many photographers look inside for inspiration and explore still life photography.
Or maybe we could use the mid-winter time to learn what the dials and buttons on our cameras do as our tune changes to spring is just around the corner. Isn't it?

Holdin' On
So, where has winter gone?
Punxsutawney Phil says spring in on the way...So what ever happened to winter this year??
From punxsutawneyphil.com:
Phil Says Spring is Right Around the Corner!
Phil's official forecast as read 2/2/07 at 7:28 a.m. at Gobbler's Knob:
El Nino has caused high winds, heavy snow, ice and freezing temperatures in the west.
Here in the East with much mild winter weather we have been blessed.
Global warming has caused a great debate.
This mild winter makes it seem just great.
On this Groundhog Day we think of one thing.
Will we have winter or will we have spring?
On Gobbler's Knob I see no shadow today.
I predict that early spring is on the way.

Demonstrating for Peace
I took this photo in Portsmouth, New Hampshire while visiting the town with my Flickr friends Alan and Ed, and his daughter. It was a short but very fun outing. Thanks guys!
